Bayer has agreed to a $4.85 million class-action settlement involving certain Lotrimin AF and Tinactin antifungal spray products that were recalled after testing revealed the presence of benzene.

The recall, first announced in October 2021, affected a range of spray products used to treat common conditions like athlete’s foot and ringworm. These products were sold nationwide, including in Louisiana.

While Bayer stated at the time that the levels detected were not expected to cause adverse health effects, the presence of benzene — a known carcinogen — raised serious concerns and ultimately led to legal action.

What Is Benzene — and Why Does It Matter?

Benzene is a chemical widely recognized as a human carcinogen. Long-term exposure has been linked to serious health conditions, particularly those affecting the blood and bone marrow.

These may include:

  • Leukemia
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Other blood-related disorders

Benzene exposure is often associated with industrial settings, but as recalls like this show, it can also appear in everyday consumer products.

At Landry & Swarr, we represent Louisiana workers and families harmed by toxic chemical exposure, including benzene.

What Products Were Affected by the Recall?

The recall included multiple antifungal spray products distributed between 2018 and 2021, such as:

  • Lotrimin AF Athlete’s Foot Sprays
  • Lotrimin Jock Itch Sprays
  • Tinactin Athlete’s Foot Sprays
  • Tinactin Powder and Liquid Sprays

These aerosol products were widely available in stores and online, making exposure possible across a broad range of consumers.

The issue was not an intentional ingredient, but rather contamination — often linked to the propellants used in spray products.

What the Settlement Means for Consumers

The $4.85 million settlement allows eligible consumers to file claims for reimbursement if they purchased affected products.

Depending on documentation:

  • Consumers with proof of purchase may recover full costs
  • Those without proof may still submit limited claims

While this type of settlement provides some financial recovery, it does not fully address the broader concern: why a cancer-linked chemical was present in consumer products at all.

A Broader Pattern of Benzene in Consumer Products

This case is not isolated.

In recent years, multiple recalls have involved benzene contamination in everyday items, including:

  • Sunscreens
  • Aerosol sprays
  • Personal care products

For Louisiana families, this raises an important reality — exposure doesn’t always happen in a refinery or chemical plant.

It can happen at home.

It can happen through products you trust.

Why This Matters in Louisiana

Louisiana has a long history of industrial exposure risks, particularly in areas with refineries, chemical plants, and manufacturing facilities.

But consumer product recalls like this expand the conversation.

They show that:

  • Toxic exposure is not always job-related
  • Families and children may also be affected
  • Everyday products can carry unexpected risks

That’s especially important in a state where many households already face elevated exposure risks due to environmental and occupational factors.

Understanding Legal Rights After Toxic Exposure

When a product contains a harmful substance — even unintentionally — it raises questions about safety standards, testing, and accountability.

Companies have a responsibility to ensure that what they sell is safe for use.

When that responsibility falls short, legal claims may arise.

In Louisiana, the time to take action in toxic exposure cases can be limited. In some situations, individuals may have as little as one year from the date of diagnosis to file a claim.

Understanding your rights early can help protect your options.
