Mesothelioma Awareness: Hope at the Forefront

April is a month loved for a wide number of reasons, not the least of which is the last throes of winter giving way to spring and eventually summer to follow. For individuals or families who have suffered from the deadly effects of mesothelioma, April is also a month that is known for hosting a large number of well-known Mesothelioma awareness events.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is also amongst the most deadly. One of the reasons this cancer gets so much attention this spring is because of the tragedy behind it. Almost all cases of mesothelioma come from exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos has long since been replaced by much safer and better alternatives, and there are even specialists who work to remove asbestos from old buildings whenever it is found. The fact that mesothelioma could have been prevented makes it all the more tragic and makes research into this particular cancer all the more important.

Antioxidants to the Rescue!

Fortunately, this year there is some potentially good news coming out for those who have been affected by this terrible cancer. While studies are still early, there does seem to be some hope that antioxidant-rich foods can help. These fruits and vegetables, sometimes referred to as “super foods,” have been tied in with being able to help other types of cancer in some cases, especially cancer caused by oxidative stress.

Scientists and medical professionals still don’t know for sure why asbestos has such a strong causal effect with mesothelioma, but one of the educated guesses is that it is from oxidative stress, which could really open the door for antioxidant foods to have a major effect on helping to prevent mesothelioma by fixing the damage in the body that results in cancer.

According to Asbestos.com a recent study by Turkish researchers show that mesothelioma causes a major jump in oxidative stress. Eating a wide variety of antioxidant rich foods like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, broccoli, red beans, walnuts, and brown rice can help flood your body with positive antioxidants that will help fight off the damage caused by oxidative stress and keep your body healthy to help make it much harder for mesothelioma to form.

Immunotherapy Drugs Lend a Helping Hand

There’s also some hope that advanced immunotherapy drug treatments may provide increasingly better results for patients who are suffering in the advanced stages of mesothelioma. This good news comes from an Italian team of doctors and researchers who had previously found more positive treatments through the correct use of Tremelimumab.

This time, according to SurvivingMesothelioma.com, their early results are showing that with the careful use of a variety of certain immunotherapy drugs, patients suffering from the advanced stages of mesothelioma are showing positive results. In other words, there are more treatments available that may actually help to alleviate the pain that patients are feeling.

In an even more positive development, almost half of the patients who took part in this study saw their tumor growth stop for months at a time. Finding a treatment that can actually stop tumor growth is a major potential breakthrough, and while these findings need to be substantiated, they’re extremely promising.

In Conclusion

When it comes to mesothelioma awareness, it’s always encouraging to get a little bit of good news. However, it’s important to remember that more funding and a lot more research is still needed in order to continue to fight this disease. Mesothelioma is still a terrible cancer, and it’s important that funding and awareness continues in order to keep advancing treatments into the future until someday, hopefully this cancer is cured.
